Charlotte's Future
WHEN
The Charlotte City Council will vote on whether to approve the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan in a public meeting on Monday, June 21 at 5pm. Meetings are streamed live on Facebook and Youtube.
WHY
As more babies are born and more people move into Charlotte, our families need more options to live in. Unfortunately, there are a number of housing options that are being built in other places around the world but they are, currently, illegal to build here in Charlotte.
Our Zoning Ordinances are our local laws that determine what types of structures can be built on certain pieces of land in our City.
Most of our developable land prevents owners from living in desirable structures like townhomes, duplexes, triplexes, and various types of multifamily housing options.
As our population grows, our demand for housing grows. Our exclusionary zoning regulations keep the supply of housing low. This represents intentional government policy to make housing unaffordable.
The Comprehensive 2040 Plan guides the City Council to do away with exclusionary land use policies and allow the housing choices that people want to come to market.
WHAT CAN YOU AS A CITIZEN DO?
This is a time and a place for you as a citizen to make your voice heard. Now, before Council votes, let us know what you think.
We are elected to represent you. I believe that this plan can make Charlotte a more equitable, accessible and interconnected city that we can all prosper in.
